Starting Over (Audible Audio Edition) Sue Moorcroft Julie Teal Whole Story Audiobooks Books

I came across this book by accident. I read an excerpt was intrigued. Tess Riddell has runaway from London and moved to the countryside. She's had some setbacks and needs to get away from it all and start over.

I really empathized with Tess. She was happy and was getting ready to get married when it all fell apart. But what happened after being jilted a few days before her wedding knocked her entirely off balance. So she ends up in Honeybun Cottage in Middledip. On the way to her new cottage, she runs into the back of a wrecker, driven by one handsome Miles Rattenbury, also better known as "Ratty." Ratty gives Tess a hand, but they rub each other the wrong way. So what happens next? Does Tess find her new start? What will she do of Olly her ex comes back?

This book was well written for the most part and I enjoyed it. There were a few bits and pieces that bothered me. I didn't like how Tess's parents were more concerned with getting her back with Olly than they were with her wishes. Then there was they way Tess disappeared without a word to anyone. And then the end which was a little unbelievable for me. But it was a good book and I am looking forward to reading more by Sue Moorcroft.

Starting Over (Audible Audio Edition) Sue Moorcroft Julie Teal Whole Story Audiobooks Books Reviews

Tess is in a quandary get married or run? She runs, and whilst on the last leg of her proposed new life in the village of Middledip, she collides with a breakdown truck. Brittle, vulnerable, upset, and a blooded nose, of course, it's entirely the truck driver's fault for having parked in a narrow country lane. On the other hand, Miles Rattenbury, mechanic-cum-proprietor of a local car workshop and classic car enthusiast, sees the obvious of someone not paying attention to bends in the road. So, this troubled meeting is set to change Tess' life in more ways than one. And Miles, Ratty to his friends, has no idea the impact Tess will have upon him once settled in her idyllic cottage. A bit of a ladies man and not looking to a permanent relationship, Ratty soon finds himself drawn more and to Tess despite her prickly nature. After all, when one has a dodgy motor, which has a tendency for regular breakdowns, Ratty is close at hand. Not unaware of her interest in him he plays a waiting game and renders her putty to his aloof if sexual appeal. But, the road of true love can be treacherous when old loves from the past drive centre stage. What occurs next is sometimes scary, funny and basically a lovely read with earthy characters in a village setting where gossip can make or break a loving relationship. Enjoy!
STARTING OVER by Sue Moorcroft.

I liked the character definitions and story during the first half. But the last third felt like it was getting worse and worse - a sinking down. It was not a good story. I felt Tess did not deserve to be happy with Miles at the end.

I much preferred two of the author's other books Want to Know a Secret and All That Mullarkey.

Things I did not like

CAUTION SPOILERS
Tess and Miles start having sex, she is using contraception. Almost immediately she becomes pregnant. Then they are both soooo happy and overjoyed to be having a baby. It did not fit. If they were so happy about it, why use contraception? The author made them too happy for me.

Miles hears bad news and says something without thinking. Tess is so enraged, she runs away and is gone "for months." No one knows where she is - not her parents, friends, or Miles. Then all of a sudden she comes back and wants to pick up where they left off. I was angry with her. I found her inconsiderate, selfish, and a coward. She didn't deserve him.

Earlier, Tess was taking too long to become intimate with Miles. When he kissed her, she made a joke about him being a frog, and it looked like she was ready for intimacy. Then moments later, Miles' ex girlfriend Franca arrives and Miles runs over and starts passionately kissing Franca and touching her bottom - in front of Tess. This had been prearranged to make Tess jealous. Then Miles avoids Tess (for weeks I believe) because he is dating Franca. Later he tells Tess all this was to make Tess jealous. This was not a fun plot choice. It might have been ok if Miles dated Franca - without the kissing and fondling immediately after kissing Tess.
END SPOILERS.

NARRATOR
I did not like the narrator Julie Teal. At first I didn't mind her, but by the end of the book I couldn't wait to get away from her voice. It was irritating, grating, too brusk, too harsh. Some of her character voices were worse than others. I prefer narrators with a softer and more pleasant sound.

I really love Sue Moorcroft's books. This was not one of my favorites, simply because the heroine was so amazingly selfish.
Tess Riddell has a bad breakup and moves to the country to escape from her past. Miles Rattenbury’s is a charmer, and fixes up old cars for business and fun. When Tess crashes her car into his tow truck, they find that they’re nearly neighbors and form a friendship with Miles.

Miles is awesome, as are the supporting characters, her new friends in town. This is why I could not forgive Tess for her complete and utter selfishness. I can't say any more about that without spoiling, but let's just say that until that, I LOVED the story. Great little village, interesting characters, laughs and a sweet story. All good. Just not one of my favorite stories. Regardless, Sue Moorcroft remains at the top of my favorite author list.
